Breast Enhancement / Augmentation is a procedure to enhance the size of the breast by placing implants behind the breast tissue.
Best Candidates:
Women with small breasts, due to poor development of breast or women who have lost their breast size and shape following pregnancies and weight reduction, who are otherwise healthy.
Technique:
Silicon gel implants or other type of implants are placed below the breast tissue or underneath the chest muscle through small incisions of about 2 inches. The location of this incision depends upon the surgeon’s choice, patient’s desire, size of the areola and size of the breast.
Variations: It should be noted that most women have breast laxity (looseness) following pregnancies and they may get benefited mostly by breast lift alone. There are some current techniques like fat injection which are under scrutiny before doing routinely.
Anesthesia:
This is done under local anesthesia with sedation in suitable candidates or under general anesthesia.
This can be done as a day –care procedure. Sometimes a one day hospital stay is required.
Before Surgery:
It is necessary to discuss in detail the following key issues:
- Type of implants
- Desired size of the breast to suit the body frame
- Duration of results
- Need to undergo breast lift along with enhancement
After Surgery:
- Minor inconveniences like temporary numbness, discomfort are expected.
Breast enhancement does not affect the ability to breast feed.
A supportive dressing has to be worn for seven days, followed by a supportive undergarment for a month.
- Strenuous exercise is not permitted for 4 weeks.
Duration of Results:
Usually long – lasting
Replacement of implant may be required after a number of years. |
