In non-medical terms “gynaecomastia” is male breast enlargement.
It can be part of obesity, normal pubertal enlargement or be rarely associated with hormonal problems.
The surgery:
The objective of surgery is to reduce the size of male breast through small incisions.
Best candidates:
Adolescent males who have crossed puberty, with persistent enlarged breast and with no other associated illness.
Technique:
The technique of removal of excess male breast depends upon the size of the gland and skin excess. The gland and fat are removed through small and inconspicuous incisions.
Variations:
In some individuals liposuction is combined with this surgery to give better results.
Anesthesia:
Gynaecomastia surgery can be done under local anesthesia with sedation in individuals with a small gland.
General anesthesia is required in individuals with a large gland or when it is combined with other aesthetic procedures.
Before surgery:
It is necessary to discuss key issues like the surgical technique, visibility of resultant scar and the need of minor secondary procedures.
After surgery:
Minor problems like bruising, pain, tenderness may be experienced. These are temporary inconveniences which may last for about a few weeks or a month.
Pressure garment is required to be worn for 2-3 weeks.
Patients can get back to normal physical activity within a week’s time.
Vigorous physical activity is allowed after about a month.
Duration of Results: Permanent.
